The Austrian baritone Thomas Weinhappel, former member of the Vienna Boys' Choir, graduated from the Music University in Vienna and is now working with Prof. Heidrun Franz-Vetter in Berlin.
On many international stages such as Vienna, Prague, Los Angeles, Singapore, Chicago and Ottawa he was very successful as Escamillo, Figaro, Wolfram, Posa, Renato, Macbeth, Hamlet and Tarquinius; he worked with directors such as Otto Schenk and Christoph Schlingensief.
The Austrian director Michael Haneke was the first to discover Weinhappel's talent "to make people out of roles". In Haneke's film "The Piano Player", Weinhappel sang Schubert's Winterreise, which he also sang in the 2019 BBC series "A Suitable Boy".
In the genre of opera, he was awarded the highest Czech state prize "Thalia award" in 2017 for his exceptional portrayal of Hamlet as the best opera singer of the year. In the same year, he also received the "Libuska Award" for the best role design and most convincing stage presence.
After his success with Mahler's Pater Ecstaticus in Sofia, he sang the title role in Don Giovanni in Paris and Wolfram at the Philharmonie Berlin.
Weinhappel now devotes himself to Wagnerian roles such as Donner (Rheingold), Holländer (Der fliegende Holländer) and Telramund (Lohengrin) as well as Richard Strauss' Jochanaan (Salome) and Puccini's Scarpia.
In June 2021, he was in Mahler's "Lied von der Erde" under Georgi Dimitrov with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra.
